Sandy's Leg

This is a picture of Sandy's leg where he had a Haematoma removed.

After tripping in his flat he woke up in the middle of the night in agony and unable to move it. There was a lump sticking out of his leg about 10cm from the point where he knocked it.

IE comedy slashdot post

I like this comedy comment I found on a rather obscure website http://humorix.org/articles/2003/02/kernel/:

"If you really want to toggle Internet Explorer into secure mode you just need to click the little "X" in the top right corner of the window."
--from a Slashdot post.

Ssh brute force attack
Wednesday, July 27, 2005, 08:48

I just happened to sit down at my server and do tail -f /var/log/secure to see someone trying to hack into the machine via ssh. See log below. They had a script which was going through a list of first names attempting to gain access.

All of this information was part of my daily email.

After reading man sshd_config I change these settings:
LoginGraceTime 120
PermitRootLogin no
MaxStartups 10:30:60

Which will hopefully limit any effort in the future. When I get time, I'll look into key based authentication.

Removing the AV clutter

I've been thinking for a while about removing the pile of kit from under my TV, now I've got cable TV, from the floor to the bottom of my TV I don't have enough room for video, dvd, surround sound, digital and cable boxes.

About 5m away from the TV I have a large cupboard in the hall. I'm going to build a shelving system and put everything in there. But what to do about the remote controls? They don't go through walls.

I found this site: www.mitedu.freeserve.co.uk/Circuits/Interface/irext5.htm

Circuit Diagram:

Which (from maplin) will cost just over £13 to build, but the advantage here is that there's no sender box - all I need is a 3mm hole drilled in the skirting board somewhere near the TV. A hidden wire takes the signal to an IR transmitter in the cupboard. Neat!

Here's my shopping list for
